Bow Hut

Bow Hut

Bow Hut – Intermediate ski mountaineering.

The trip usually starts with a one night stay at the Lake Louise Hostel followed by a group meeting prior to going to the Bow Hut.

Information about the hostel: https://hihostels.ca/en/destinations/alberta/hi-lake-louise

Approach: moderate, the approach from Bow Lake to the hut takes 4 to 6 hours. Expect 400m of elevation gain. The track can sometimes be very firm and icy. You must be able to do kick turns with a full pack. If you are not used to skiing uphill and downhill with a heavy multi-day pack, take the time to practice before the trip.

This trip is for people who would like to get introduced to glacier travel. As always in the back country, the objectives will depend on the group participants and the conditions and we will adjust accordingly.

The link below is a good resource for possible objectives. Please take the time to do some research about the area prior to the trip so you can propose objectives based on your fitness and experience.

Cabin facilities: The kitchen and living quarters are spacious. However, be aware that we may be sharing the space with other parties. The hut is well equipped with several hot plates and sinks. You do not need to bring any kitchen equipment with you. The cabin is heated with a wood stove in the kitchen and one in the sleeping area.  The sleeping area can be cold and humid however, it does get warm at night because it is very small. If you wish to light a fire in the sleeping area, do so late in the afternoon to avoid overheating the space. The cabin is also well-equipped to dry equipment. Water is from melted snow. Since we are likely to share the hut with other parties and the hut can accommodate up to 30 people, be aware that it takes a lot of snow to make enough water for cooking and drinking. Please make sure you assist in fetching snow and filling the pots to melt it as well as chopping wood.

Food: You are responsible for all your own meals. We encourage people to make food groups as the cooking facilities at Asulkan Cabin are limited. The coordinator(s) may help organize.
