Kelowna Rock - Climbing and Bouldering
No its not the latest radio station, but something equally in dire need for K-town. Kelowna Rock - Climbing and Bouldering is a 152-page book chock full of photos, maps and route descriptions for climbing and bouldering in Kelowna, BC's 4 most popular regions.
In 1999 Dean Urness and the ACC published Kelowna Rockclimbs. This new guidebook published by Blue Moose Publications includes 86 previously undocumented sport climbing routes, 34 new bouldering problems and 60 traditional (trad) routes. These trad routes were set by veteran mountaineers like Eric Rayson and ACC member Leon Blumer, both of whom contributed to the contents of Kelowna Rock.
Kelowna Rock focuses on the climbing areas known as The Boulderfieds,The Lonely Crags, Cedar Park (Kelowna Crags) and Mt. Boucherie. Along with route descriptions are route grades, lengths and number of bolts, so climbers can plan ahead to have enough rope and enough draws. It took authors Jani Vaaranpaa and Karin Hanna 2 years of climbing more than 300 routes, shooting over 4000 photos, hiking, researching, designing and editing until at last they had a printed guidebook, released in March.
Kelowna Rock - Climbing and Bouldering (ISBN 978-0-9697198-6-1) is available through the national ACC website, bookstores and gear shops. For more information, and a complete list of where to buy this great little guidebook, go to the website kelownarockbc.com
