  1. The Trip

Hiking to the top of Frosty Mountain's east peak, and maybe some light scrambling to get to the slightly higher west peak. A detailed description can be found at clubtread,

A map of the south east part of the park is at:

And a detailed trail description from BC parks is at:

Overall, from the Lightening Lake start, it is about 22 km round trip and 1150 m elevation gain. Judging from Google Maps, and the trip reports, one drops between 100 and 200 meters from the east summit, gaining that and a bit more back again, and round trip distance is probably between three and four km. I'm thinking between three and four hours up, and inside two hours to the west peak and back. From the east peak, safely allow about the same amount of time down as it took to get up. So, a ten hour day should do it.

    Things to Bring

It is October, and the top is at about 2400m. There may be snow, and it has probably been freezing. Bring clothing for the weather, which includes things to stay warm and good footwear. At the higher elevation, if it isn't rock, it will probably be a bit muddy, especially as the frost / snow melts. Given that we have about 11 hours between sunrise and sunset, having a flashlight or a headlamp is also important, in case something goes wrong and we have to hike out in the dark.

    Times and Such

The drive from Kelowna is about three hours, slightly faster if one takes the connector and 5A through Princeton than going via Keremeos. Sunrise is at about 7:20 AM, and sunset at 6:39 PM. I'd like those of us going to meet at the Lightening Lakes day use area in Manning Park as close to 8:00 AM as possible. Make sure to get in touch with me, so I know who is coming. or 250-762-2208. I can be lazy about checking the forum, so a direct contact is best.

If there is enough interest soon (i.e. eight people), I can see about getting a cabin in Manning Park from Friday evening to Sunday morning. The minimum stay for the reservation is two nights, and it will come to about $60 per person. Closing the day with some good food, wine, and friends would be nice, and those with the time could enjoy Sunday in the park too.

I'm all in for it. I'll be in Vanc Friday night and can meet at the trailhead at any designated time. I saw Frosty last week and the Larches are in full colour.

  3. As of today, 9:15 pm Wednesday, it looks like I'll be driving solo from Kelowna and Kevin solo from Vancouver if we go ahead with this. I'm going to cancel this as a club trip for lack of interest.

Sorry for anyone who was still thinking about it, but I'll be making other plans for Saturday.
